简介：建筑工人李三辈（毕鑑昌 饰）文化水平低，他常为此苦恼，大学生秦淑贞（李长乐 饰）是夜校老师，开始时她瞧不起三辈这样的笨学生，认为他们只配干粗活。但当她了解三辈的出身后，改变了原有的看法。几年后，三辈通过刻苦学习，已成长为能看建筑图纸的“土专家”。一次施工中为了图速度，忽视了向老工人师傅学习经验，操作失败，三辈摔成重伤。事后三辈主动承认错误，高师傅（王斑 饰）、秦淑贞也作了自我批评。1960年，三辈调往另一大型建筑工地，他边学习边钻研，向工地领导提出自己的革新建议，得到专家认可，但也有人反对，最后，在陈书记（张荧 饰）的支持下，他收获了成功，也收获了秦淑贞的爱情......
